Build Your Hopes On Eternal Things That Never Pass Away

Hold To God’s Unchanging Hand was written at the beginning of the 1900’s by J. Wilson and F. L. Eiland. This traditional American Christian song is about the unchangeable nature of God in a world of uncertainty.

Hold To God’s Unchanging Hand

“When I was a child, no family picnic at a nearby state park was complete without the thrilling crossing of an unused train trestle suspended over a river. As small as I was, the space between the ties seemed too far for my small legs, but not too far if I was holding fast to my father’s hand. The trestle has since been torn down; and I am more likely needed to support my elderly father as he walks, still I have the blessed assurance that my God remains the same. He has been, He is, and always will be God.”

God Is Faithful To Never Leave Or Forsake You

by Steve Nordholm

“Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you, so that we confidently say, The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me? … Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13: 5 – 6, 8 NASB

In a world that is, and has ever been, in a state of constant change it is a great comfort to know that we can hold fast to God who is forever unchanging and steadfast in His love and care for us.

Throughout earthly history one kingdom after another has risen to power, flourished for a time, and then fallen into the ruins of history. The ancient kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome all rose to great heights of earthly civilization and splendor, only to flourish in their accomplishments for a time, and then to fade away into the memories and ruins of time. And these changes continue to this day.

In recent times we saw Adolf Hitler try to establish the Third Reich, a Kingdom to last a thousand years, we saw Emperor Hirohito try to establish an Imperial Japanese World Empire, we have seen others try as well. All have failed. The kingdoms that are now will also one day fail. This is certain. In all of this it is only God who is unchanging. He is the only certain hope — the only steadfast influence in a world of constant change and turmoil.

All the great aspirations and accomplishments of men will one day be a memory in history. Great companies come and go. Great men come and go. All our earthly labor will one day be but a memory, often forgotten, in history. In all the changes of life the only real unchanging hope we have to cling to is God Himself.

No matter what you are facing in life today, you can reach out and hold onto God’s steady hand and know that you will be safe from the perils of today and ready for that Hope and Home in Heaven that will never fade away. He will never leave you or forsake you. That is His Unchanging Promise to you. To make that promise a reality in your life, just hold more closely to Him.

Unlike this world, and the things of this world, God is the same yesterday, today and forever. You can completely trust in Him who will NEVER fail you. At times it may seem as though the world, or someone in the world has forsaken you. In contrast, God will never forsake you. You need only reach out and take hold of His hand. In all of this life He is, and will always be your ever present, unchanging God of Hope and Eternal Love.

When the cares of this World become all too consuming, or you feel the desires of this life beckoning you to partake of its pleasures; that is the time to remember that God’s Hand remains unchanged and His Word reaches out to you in truth and love. In those times, and at all times, He calls you to hold fast His Hand, and to pursue only those things that will bring glory and honor to Him.

Words To: Hold To God’s Unchanging Hand

by J. Wilson and F. L. Eiland

NOTE: In the video recording above some of these original words and verses have been rearragned or reworded slightly.

Time is filled with swift transition,
Naught of earth unmoved can stand,
Build your hopes on things eternal,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

Refrain:
Hold to God’s unchanging hand,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand;
Build your hopes on things eternal,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

Trust in Him who will not leave you,
Whatsoever years may bring,
If by earthly friends forsaken
Still more closely to Him cling.

Refrain

Covet not this world’s vain riches
That so rapidly decay,
Seek to gain the Heavenly treasures,
They will never pass away.

Refrain

When your journey is completed,
If to God you have been true,
Fair and bright the home in glory
Your enraptured soul will view.
